Atypical Antipsychotic Medications
POSITION STATEMENT

Approved by the Board of Trustees, 2000
Approved by the Assembly, 1999
Reaffirmed, September 2009

"Policy documents are approved by the APA Assembly and Board of Trustees… These are …position statements that define APA official policy on specific subjects…" -- APA Operations Manual.

Given the current state of knowledge, it is our opinion that the new generation of antipsychotic medications (except clozapine) need to be made available as first-line treatments for appropriate individuals throughout all systems of care. Similarly, clozapine needs to be made available for individuals with treatment refractory psychotic disorders. Access to these medications needs to be made available in all systems of health care and by all public and private insurers including all jails, prisons and youth services facilities.
