Chief Resident Leadership FAQ

This year, the APA will be providing grants to residency programs to send their chief resident to attend this conference. This is different from what we have done in previous years. The resident is responsible for making their own travel arrangements, which includes hotel and airfare.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is this only for general psychiatry chiefs?
While general psychiatry chiefs get first preference to come to this program, other chiefs can come as long as space is available. If child or other chiefs would like to attend, they should send an email to education@psych.org to be placed on the wait-list.

2. Can more than one chief per program come to the conference?
Only one chief per program will be funded to attend. If other chiefs wish to attend, they will not be funded by the APA.

3. Is this open to chief residents from outside the US and Canada?
No grant is available for chiefs outside the US and Canada. If chiefs are able to fund their own way to San Francisco, they can attend the conference.

4. How much is the grant and what does it cover?
The grant per residency program is $1,000 and covers all travel expenses to attend the chief conference (airfare/ground transportation, hotel, and miscellaneous travel expenses).

5. When do we receive the grant check?
The grant check will be made payable to the residency program (not the individual resident) and will be distributed onsite at the conference. If the resident does not show up, the program will not get the grant check.

6. Can the grant check be made to the individual resident?
No because money directed to the individual is considered taxable income. (It will necessitate the APA to collect the person’s Social Security number and  issue a 1099 at the end of this tax year for income tax filing purposes.)

7. What is the dress code for the conference?
This is a professional conference and the dress code is business casual.

8. Do you have to be an APA member to attend the conference? No, this is open to chief residents regardless of their APA membership status (although APA membership is encouraged).
