                Directors, Residency Training

                APA Members-in-Training

FROM:      David Preven, M.D., Chair, Selection Committee

Thank you for your interest in the APA/Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellowship in Public Psychiatry. We look forward to receiving your application materials. Please note the deadline for receipt is April 15, 2008.

This important collaborative venture between the American Psychiatric Association and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company provides for the selection of ten residents in psychiatry, based on recommendations from their Departments and evidence of a track record of commitment to and accomplishment in public psychiatry.

The purposes of the APA/Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellowship are twofold: (1) to heighten psychiatric residents' awareness of the many activities of psychiatry in the public sector and of the career opportunities in this work, and (2) to provide experiences which will contribute to the professional development of those residents who will play leadership roles within the public sector in future years.

The fellowship term will begin in September 2008 and end at the close of the APA Annual Meeting in May 2010. Fellowship recipients will be active participants in the work of a wide variety of APA councils and committees and will attend the Fall Components' Meetings. Additionally, fellowship representatives will be chosen to serve on APA's Joint Reference Committee and the Board of Trustees, as well as the Board of Directors of the American Association of Community Psychiatrists.

The Fellowship also provides support for these outstanding residents in psychiatry to attend and participate in the APA's Institute on Psychiatric Services (IPS) in October 2008 and 2009. Fellows are expected to plan a limited number of workshop presentations for the 2009 Institute. If the proposals are accepted by the Program Committee, the fellows are guaranteed attendance and participation as faculty at the second IPS. Funds for registration, travel, hotel, and out-of-pocket expenses will be provided. Sponsorship to attend the APA Annual Meeting is not a benefit of this program.

Nomination Procedure and Eligibility Criteria for the APA/Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellowship in Public Psychiatry
