Workshops
Format Description
Workshops are semi-structured learning events designed to facilitate interaction and collective learning. This format is very different than the lecture format, as the interaction is expected to be quite lively. Interaction includes more than "discussion" and questions-and-answers. Presenters are expected to describe what techniques they will use (e.g., small group discussion, games, role plays, feedback from audiovisual clips, etc.) in their abstract. The format may include multiple, brief presentations, but a minimum of thirty-minutes is devoted to active interaction.
There are three types of workshops:
° The 90-minute Issue Workshop deals with topics of special interest to psychiatry, particularly innovative or controversial topics.
° The 90-minute Component Workshop is only proposed by APA committees, councils, task forces, district branches, etc., and address topics relevant to their work and APA members. Only one submission per group will be accepted.
° A Media Workshop is a three-hour workshop showing a feature length movie (all other media presentations are submitted as issue workshops for a 90-minute time slot). Presenters need to be specific about methods for teaching and learning.
Workshop submissions for the 2009 Annual Meeting in San Francisco will open on May 13, 2008 and a submission must be completed in its entirety by August 28, 2008 -- with the exception of Component Workshops which are due on September 19, 2008.
N.B. Please advise all participants that, if accepted, all participants must register for the Annual Meeting at least for the day of the presentation. Chairpersons should ensure that prospective participants are aware of this requirement.
