Resident Monitors Wanted for the 161st APA Annual Meeting
Washington, DC
May 3-8, 2008
DON’T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!
Learn more about your favorite psychiatric topic and hear top psychiatric thought leaders present. Learn how to spot bias and what is a balanced CME presentation and assist in the CME evaluation of the symposia.
The American Psychiatric Association’s scientific program sessions at the Annual Meeting are held to strict standards for balance, scientific rigor and objectivity. Again at his year’s Annual Meeting, the APA Department of Continuing Medical Education is hiring residents in psychiatry who will be attending the meeting to serve as monitors and alternates for Industry-Supported Symposia (ISS) and other scientific session formats. Residents who are selected to participate will serve as monitors or alternates for sessions ranging from 1.5 to 3 hours.
Monitors will assist APA in ensuring that the scientific program sessions adhere to APA guidelines by completing a program review form that includes questions about disclosure of possible conflict of interest by each presenter, bias, the use of drug brand names, and discussions about off-label psychopharmacologic options. In addition, monitors will obtain a copy of all handouts for the APA Department of Continuing Medical Education. Alternates agree to be available for specific sessions and to function as a monitor if required.
In exchange for serving as a monitor APA will pay each resident an honorarium of $100 per 2.5-3 hour session and $75 per 1.5-2 hour session. Alternates will receive $25 per session as on-call pay. No other expenses will be covered. Payment will be mailed 4 to 6 weeks after the meeting.
All monitors and alternates are invited to attend a 90 minute workshop on recognizing bias in presentations given by Donald Hilty, MD from the Department of Psychiatry, University of California at Davis, Phil Muskin, MD , Professor of Clinical Psychiatry Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons and Kellie Harding, MD Clinical Research Fellow, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University Medical Center from on Saturday May 3rd at 9 AM at the ISS office Room 203B in the Convention Center.
Interested residents should submit an application by March 14, 2008. The program is open to all psychiatry residents; however assignment(s) will be made with the following applicants receiving priority: current APA members and PGY 3 or 4. Applications are processed according to the date the application is received in the APA office. Other variables used in determining assignments include schedule availability and topic(s) of interest. Assignments are not considered finalized until you receive a confirmation letter and you return the response form.
