Biographical Sketch:

Howard B. Moss, M.D. is the Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Research at National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in Bethesda, Maryland. He is a board-certified psychiatrist with added qualifications in the subspecialty of Addiction Psychiatry. He has been Professor of Psychiatry at University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and the University of Pittsburgh. For over 24 years, his research as has focused on the etiology and biopsychosocial liability for substance use disorders and the intergenerational transmission of risk and resilience. This work has employed diverse methodologies that include neurochemistry, psychophysiology, neuroimaging, and molecular and behavioral genetics. Most recently, his research has focused on the diagnostic heterogeneity of alcohol use disorders, including the delineation of subtypes, intermediate phenotypes, endophenotypes, and phenocopies. The goal of these studies is to enhance the efficiency of clinical, genetic and biobehavioral research on alcoholism. The work has also provoked substantial interest in other taxonomic issues in contemporary psychiatry, included the DSM-V.
