Dr. Katharine Phillips is Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Phillips received her bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. She completed her internship at Dartmouth Medical School and her residency at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Much of Dr. Phillips’ career has focused on clinical research on body dysmorphic disorder as well as obsessive compulsive disorder, other anxiety disorders, and personality disorders. Dr. Phillips has received numerous honors and awards for her research and other academic contributions, including a Special Presidential Commendation from the American Psychiatric Association for her research accomplishments. She has been a member and chair of the National Institute of Mental Health’s Interventions Research Review Committee (Initial Review Group). Dr. Phillips is Secretary of the Board of Directors and Deputy Editor (Books Division) of American Psychiatric Publishing, and she is a member of a number of other editorial boards. Dr. Phillips is also a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and the American College of Psychiatrists.

Dr. Phillips chaired the committee that produced the gender white paper for the Research Agenda for DSM-V and participated in the DSM-V research planning conference on the obsessive compulsive behavior spectrum. She has been a member and chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Committee on Psychiatric Diagnosis and Assessment and a member of the Council on Research. She co-edited the book Advancing DSM: Dilemmas in Psychiatric Diagnosis.
