Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Rubio-Stipec currently works as a senior scientist consultant at the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education. She holds a master’s degree in economics from New York University and a Doctor in Science degree in epidemiology and biostatistics from Harvard University. She has combined both fields in her career as a professor at the University of Puerto Rico with joint appointments in the departments of economics (in the College of Social Science) and psychiatry of the School of Medicine. At the Behavioral Science Research Institute of the University of Puerto Rico she has acted as co-principal investigator in several NIMH–funded research projects in psychiatric epidemiology. For more than ten years she was a member of the editorial committee of the World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI) and participated in the development and field testing of the WHO-CIDI 2.1. She directed the first Reference and Training Center for the CIDI in Spanish, where she was in charge of the translation of the CIDI and its computerized version (CIDI-Auto) into Spanish. She has trained many researchers and physicians in the use of these instruments in many parts of the world.
She has many publications, mainly in the area of psychiatric epidemiology, most of them addressing measurement issues, psychometric properties of diagnostic instruments, cross-cultural comparison, risk factors associated with mental illness, the effect of migration, and use of services. In her new role as director of methods and statistics for the DSM-V Taskforce she has been developing a directory of available data sets. This effort will contribute to APA commitment to an “evidence-based” diagnostic system.
