What is the status of the ICD-10?
ICD-10, the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases, was published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993. Although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition and Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV) and (DSM-IV-TR) was developed with the explicit goal of compatibility with ICD-10, they include ICD-9-CM codes since implementation of ICD-10 in the United States has been significantly delayed. Even so, a draft clinical modification of the ICD-10 (the ICD-10-CM), for use in the United States, has been developed by the National Center for Health Statistics. (For more information about ICD-10-CM, click here). When a new version of the ICD is implemented in the United States, the version of the DSM in current use at that time will be modified to include the new ICD codes.
