Anxiety/Mood Disorders Fellowship Program Descriptions

Fellowship Title:

Research Fellowship In Mood Disorders, Functional Neuromodulation and Neuroimaging

Fellowship Description:

The Brain Stimulation Laboratory and the Mood Disorders Program at MUSC offer a 1 to 2 year clinical research fellowship in a variety of brain stimulation techniques (TMS, DBS, VNS and ECT) focused on treatment resistant depression. The group is a leading authority in translational neuromodulation research in psychiatric disorders. The group is particularly interested in elucidating the underlying neurobiology of mood disorders and the putative mechanisms of action of antidepressants. A detailed description can be accessed on the web link below.

Trainees will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing projects initially and would also be expected to develop their own studies in the future. In addition, they will have exposure to all components of the research program, which allow for an integrative experience. These components include in addition to clinical trials in neuromodulation techniques, structural (T1, DTI) and functional neuroimaging (fMRI, TMSfMRI, VNSfMRI, LFBF and Perfusion MRI), TMS cortical excitability studies, modeling (Markov or discrete event modeling) and basic affective neuroscience research (rodents). The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to develop skills to become an independent researcher.

Applicants should have completed a Psychiatry residency and be eligible for medical licensure in the state of South Carolina. Prior research experience is encouraged. Salary will be at PG-V level with benefits package.

Psychiatrists who are in their fourth year of residency training or have graduated from residency in the past year are eligible to apply. Training is provided mainly through participation in research, with additional teaching and supervision by senior faculty members, and opportunities for participation in clinical care of patients with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and related conditions. Trainees will be exposed to clinical, neuroimaging, genetic, and preclinical research at McLean Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, but they will be expected to pick a scientific mentor and work closely with that mentor on a single major project. In addition, trainees will receive guidance on research ethics, grant-writing, and publications and they will be expected to apply for external funding during the course of the Fellowship

Deadline for applications is November 1st, with the Fellowship starting July 1st of each year. McLean Hospital is an affirmative action/equal employment opportunity/ADA employer. A Member of the Partners HealthCare System.
