Child Psychiatry Research Training Program |

This training program is designed to provide research training of young investigators at the predoctoral and post-doctoral level in areas of inquiry related to childhood psychopathology. General goals for all trainees will be for them to: 1) acquire an awareness of all forms of childhood disorders and psychopathology; 2) be knowledgeable about methods of research design and analysis; 3) be aware of the current empirical approaches utilized in investigations of childhood psychopathology; and 4) develop the general and specific skills needed for research careers. Research training will be offered in four thematically organized research tracks: severe psychopathology in childhood and adolescence, family genetic influences, treatment and prevention, and effects of traumatic events on children. Training objectives have been specified for each track. Both general goals and specific objectives will be met through participation in the research program of at least one mentor as well as in a series of didactic seminars designed for this training program and in more specialized courses offered in various schools and departments within the medical school and university. |

Fellowship Description: |
The successful matching of faculty mentors with postdoctoral fellows lies at the heart of this research training program. Faculty mentors include established investigators in child psychiatry, pediatrics, psychology, developmental neurosciences, genetics, and epidemiology. The core curriculum focuses on acquiring the skills necessary to become an independent investigator, including formal training in research design and biostatistics, mastery of the knowledge base, protection of human subjects, the need to safeguard the integrity of the research enterprise, and practical experience in preparing grant applications and providing formalized peer review. The program is competitive and seeks highly motivated individuals interested in academic research careers in child psychiatry, psychology and related basic science disciplines. |

Fellowship Description: |
Research fellowships are tailored to the individual applicant's interests, drawing upon faculty engaged in diverse basic science, clinical, and scholarly activities both within the department of psychiatry and elsewhere in the university. The fellow is assigned to a faculty research mentor with compatible interests and typically joins the mentor in ongoing research while developing a related project of his/her own design. The didactic component of most research involves formal course work in statistics and research design, as well as in other subjects pertinent to the fellow's particular field of study. Recent fellows have pursued studies of bereaved children, adolescent depression, pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder, and pervasive developmental disorders. |

Fellowship Description: |
This is a two to three year fellowship that aims to develop independent investigators in sciences relating to child psychopathology. The fellowship offers opportunities for participation and the development of expertise in functional imaging, pharmachokinetics, psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment protocols, preventive techniques in a public health setting, epidemiology and nosology, the development of computerized assessment techniques, and informatics. Research trainees have priority access to the facilities at an NIMH Intervention Research Center that offers support for subject recruitment and training in assessment methods, psychotherapeutic methods, and biostatistics and research design. The Center provides a source of funds to offset trainees research costs. |

Clinical Research Training in Child Psychiatry |

Fellowship Description: |
This NIMH-sponsored program prepares trainees to formulate original and incisive research questions in child mental health intervention and services research, and acquire requisite technical expertise to prepare them for careers as independent investigators in at least one of the following areas: 1) intervention and prevention research using clinical trials methodology2) mental health services research, including dissemination studies; 3) clinical epidemiology, understanding the predictors of course, onset, and response to treatment 4) biological and genetic predictors of treatment response. A multipdisciplinary faculty group with a long and successful history of research and research training is involved with the program, with expertise in all of the above-noted areas. The foremost aspect of the program is the pairing of the trainee with an academically successful mentor. The mentor involves the trainee in existing projects, supervises the trainee in the development of publications, and helps the trainee to draft research protocols that will lead to significant advances in the field and external funding for independent research. In the summer medical student research elective, medical students will work with a research preceptor from the training faculty on a project leading to a publishable product in order to stimulate greater interest in child psychiatry research. |

It includes opportunities for training in: research methods/design and statistical analysis; structured, multi-informant and multi-modal development assessments suitable for children, families and their contexts; the role of risk and protective factors in developmental psychopathology; prevention and early intervention; ethics, informed consent, research with minors and scientific integrity; and grant writing. |
