Postdoctoral Training Program in Mental Health Services Research

Fellowship Description:

The Postdoctoral Training Program in Mental Health Services Research is sponsored by the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research at Rutgers University. Funded by NIMH, the program trains researchers to apply sophisticated theoretical and methodological approaches to mental health services research. Some trainees undertake independent projects under faculty supervision, while others become participants in ongoing research projects involving a variety of program faculty. Trainees and faculty represent diverse fields, including anthropology, economics, history, law, psychology, psychiatry, public health, sociology, and social work.

Psychiatry - Primary Care Fellowship

Fellowship Description:

A two-year fellowship designed to provide methodologic skills acquisition in addition to mental health services research experience with established investigators. Research emphasis includes the following areas: interventions to improve the quality of mental health care and outcomes of medical patients with anxiety and depressive disorders, somatization,
comorbidity of psychiatric and chronic medical disorders, epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in primary care, and the effect of psychiatric disorders on health services utilization and costs.

Fellowship Title:

Research Training Program in Treatment Research

Fellowship Description:

This NIMH-funded Treatment Research Training Program is directed at preparing postdoctoral fellows to conduct independent research in pharmacologic and psychosocial treatment modalities. The program prepares post-residency psychiatrists, post-doctoral psychologists, and behavioral scientists to conduct independent research in the area of treatment research. The program covers five broad areas of research training in treatment for: 1) mood disorders; 2) anxiety disorders; 3) PTSD and personality disorders; 4) addictive disorders and comorbidity; and 5) childhood and adolescent disorders. A formal didactic curriculum comple-ments hands-on research and super-vision. It includes opportunities for training in: treatment research methods/design and statistical analysis; individual and family therapy, and pharmacologic treatment strategies; the ethical conduct of research, and grant writing. The trainees’ individual needs are also satisfied by formal courses at Brown University and by the guidance of appropriate mentors.

Fellowship Title:

Harvard University Ph.D. Program in Health Policy Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Mental Health Services Research

Fellowship Description:

The Division of Health Policy Research and Education at Harvard University offers advanced training in mental services and health policy research to individuals who have already completed all requirements for Ph.D., M.D., or other relevant doctoral degrees in economics, sociology, psychology, social work, psychiatry, public health or other related fields. This training is supported by the National Institute of Mental Health under the National Research Service Award programs. Fellows accepted for enrollment enter the program for periods of up to two years, depending on the nature of their chosen areas of interest and the time required for the kind of project activity they identify in conjunction with a program mentor.

Training emphases are the organization, financing, utilization, quality and political analysis of mental health care. The program provides experience in a well-funded research environment with excellent opportunities for faculty collaboration and publication. We have funding for two post-docs each year, and awards will be made for a two-year period. Pre-doctoral training grants in mental health services research are also available through the Harvard Ph.D. Program in Health Policy (www.fas.harvard.edu/~healthpl).
