Program for Minority Research Training in Psychiatry (PMRTP) |
|
Fellowship Description: |
This NIMH-funded, APIRE-administered institutional National Research Service Award grant began in late 1989. It provides support (stipends, tuition and fees, travel expenses) for minority medical students, psychiatric residents, and post-residency fellows to pursue research training in research-intensive departments of psychiatry nationwide. An individual at the training site (the research "mentor") oversees the research training experience. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Deadline for post-residency fellows and for residents seeking one or more years of training is December 1 (to begin training on or before the following June 30). For medical student summer programs, the deadline is April 1. The deadline for others is at least three months before the proposed training is to begin. |

Fellowship Title: |
Exchange Visitor Program |
|
Fellowship Description: |
The Intramural Research Program (IRP), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is a Federal research program focusing on research on drug abuse and drug addiction. NIDA is an Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is a major national research organization and a principle component of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The DHHS is the Federal Agency charged with the mission of evaluating, researching, enhancing, and regulating health care for the American people. The IRP/NIDA is located in Baltimore, MD.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Visiting Program provides opportunities for foreign scientists to train and conduct collaborative research at the NIH, the principal agency of the U.S. Government responsible for conducting and supporting biomedical research. Annually, more than 2,000 scientists from other nations conduct research in the basic and clinical science laboratories on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, and in several field units around the country. Each visitor works closely with a senior NIH investigator who serves as supervisor or sponsor.
Visiting Fellows are equivalent to Postdoctoral IRTAs except that they are citizens of foreign countries – a doctoral degree is generally required. Visiting Fellows generally stay at the NIH for 3 years, but extensions up to 5 years are possible. Initial appointments are generally for 2 years, with extensions possible. Visiting Fellows are generally brought on board as J-1 visa holders or for a F-1 practicum training which generally leads to J-1 status. Visiting Fellows receive training in research at the NIH. Exchange Visitors may also be appointed at higher levels - as Research and Clinical Fellows, and even more permanent categories. This is accomplished through use of different visa mechanism, i.e., H1-B1 or 0-1. These higher-category exchange visitors come to the NIH to conduct research, and lack the more comprehensive training nature of the Visiting Fellow appointment. Foreign citizen Research and Clinical Fellows are considered Federal Employees. Fellowships include competitive salaries and a full Federal benefits package.
Initial appointments and extensions of all foreign citizens require U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) approval. DHHS and NIH are Equal Employment Opportunity Employers. |
