Psychobiology/Psychopharmacology Training Program Descriptions

Fellowship Title:

Biological Psychiatry and Neuroscience

Fellowship Description:

The UCSD Fellowship in Biological Psychiatry and Neuroscience is a research training program for psychiatrists, psychologists, and basic neuroscientists working in areas relevant to psychiatry. Typically Fellows spend two years in the program, during which they develop a research project under the close supervision of one of the faculty of the UCSD Department of Psychiatry, or another investigator in the La Jolla (UCSD/Salk/Scripps) research community. Descriptions of the research interests of the Department faculty can be found at the URL below. A major goal of the program is the successful completion of a research project resulting in publication in a peer-reviewed journal. In addition to this project, Fellows participate in a wide range of educational experiences related to their field of interest and career development. These training opportunities range from academic areas such as research ethics and statistical methods to practical subjects such as grant writing, giving research presentations, and the peer review of manuscripts. Most graduates of the program have successfully continued in further research training, accepted positions as junior faculty, as emerged outstanding psychiatric researchers. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent (green card) residents. Women and minorities traditionally under-represented in academic medicine are especially encouraged to apply.

Fellowship Title:

Schizophrenia/Psychopharmacology Research Fellowship

Fellowship Description:

This fellowship is geared towards developing skills in the field of  Schizohrenia research including psychopharmacology and neuroimaging. Current STAR research studies include: Psycho-pharmacological augmentation trials: These trials focus on the GABAergic glutamatergic and noradrenergic systems and their relation to negative symptoms and cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia. These augmentation studies test the possibility of improving negative symptoms and cognitive abilities in patients with schizophrenia by adding specific augmenting agents to preexisting antypsychotic treatment.

Psycho-pharmacological treatment studies: With novel antipsychotic agents, these studies test the ability of new medications to ameliorate psychotic symptoms both positive and negative symptoms as well as cognitive dysfunction in patients with Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective disorder.

Neuroimaging studies : These studies employ MRI, functional MRI, MR-spectroscopy, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to explore novel treatment strategies and gain a better understanding of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
