Schizophrenia Research Fellowship Program Descriptions

Fellowship Title:

Interdisciplinary Training in Psychiatry and Neuroscience

Fellowship Description:

The training program is jointly sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The faculty members all have appointments in either of these two departments and have an established record of collaborative interaction. The research interests of the core faculty represent the major sub-disciplines of the neurosciences and biological psychiatry, including molecular and cellular neurobiology, developmental neurobiology, systems neurobiology, behavioral biology, neuroimaging, psychiatric genetics and neuropsychiatry. The primary vehicle for training is supervised research in a laboratory of one of the core faculty members combined with an organized didactic program in relevant aspects of neuroscience and psychiatric research methodology. The training program provides a unique opportunity for M.D.s and Ph.D.s to obtain training at the postdoctoral level in basic neuroscience research oriented toward clinical psychiatry.

Fellowship Title:

Schizophrenia Clinical Research Training

Fellowship Description:

The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center includes inpatient and outpatient settings, specialty research programs in motor disorders, brain imaging and postmortem tissue research, and basic neuroscience laboratories. The program offers comprehensive clinical and basic training in schizophrenia research. Special emphasis is given to the integration of basic neuroscience knowledge and clinical research. From the beginning, fellows participate actively in ongoing research projects. In time, under the supervision of a senior mentor, he/she is guided in developing a project in an area of interest. A dedicated program introduces the fellow to the methodological, statistical and ethical aspects of research. Clinical research opportunities are varied and include: psychopharmacology, neuroimaging (structural and functional), neuropsychology, neurophysiology. Various basic laboratory experiences in molecular biology, pharmacology, electrophysiology, or anatomy are also possible.
