Education

Education in psychiatry is not limited to medical school, residency training or specific CME activities, but rather is a lifelong endeavor for psychiatrists and other physicians. A number of organizations have psychiatric education as their main focus, including the Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training (AADPRT). Other psychiatric organizations of interest include the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education Programs (ADMSEP), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the American Association for Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry (AACDP).

The
Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) addresses issues of education in psychiatry beginning in medical school and continuing throughout the careers of psychiatrists. It also helps in the career development of psychiatrists in academic medicine, providing a forum for the exchange of knowledge about teaching, curriculum development, and other practical issues for academic psychiatrists. The AAP/Glaxo Wellcome Junior Faculty Development Award honors psychiatrists for outstanding educational achievement and is designed to identify, recognize, and support the careers of new psychiatric educators by financially supporting their participation in the AAP Annual Meeting.

The
American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training (AADPRT) is a national organization whose membership includes general and child and adolescent psychiatry residency training directors, psychiatric subspecialty (geriatric psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and forensic psychiatry) training directors, chairpersons of departments of psychiatry, division chiefs and educators in psychiatry. AADPRT promotes the highest possible standards in psychiatric residency education and strives to fulfill the professional needs of training directors and educators. They provide a calendar of events and deadlines that will be helpful to those involved in psychiatric education and those interested in general psychiatry and psychiatric subspecialty topics.

The
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN) is a nonprofit corporation founded in 1934 with the intention of identifying quality specialists in psychiatry and neurology. The goal of the ABPN is to enhance the quality of psychiatric and neurological care through a voluntary certification process, thereby serving the public interest. ABPN’s site includes sections on frequently asked questions about the examinations/process, policies, application for the examinations, and information pertaining to the various certificates currently available, among others.

The
American Psychiatric Association (APA) itself has numerous portions of its site dedicated to such issues as research, available journals, electronic libraries, current publications, CME activities, awards and fellowships, and education of medical students and residents/fellows.
