Area Councils

The Bylaws of the APA established geographical areas of the Association.  The Assembly Procedural Code authorized the creation of an Area Council in each of the seven geographical areas.

An Area Council provides an organizational structure and interface between the Assembly and the District Branches within each Area.  It enhances and promotes cooperative activities for its District Branches in areas such as continuing medical education, member recruitment and retention, advocacy, and public affairs.  An Area Council serves as a forum for discussion of regional issues and the discussion and debate of national policy proposals.  It helps to promote and strengthen relationships between state governments and organized psychiatry.  Each Area Council serves to enhance the participation and involvement of all members in the APA by welcoming the inclusion of Members-in-Training, Early Career Psychiatrists, Minority/Underrepresented Groups and Allied Organization Psychiatrists.

Each Area Council is comprised of an Area Representative and an Area Deputy Representative, the Representatives and Deputy Representatives of the District Branches within the Area, the Area MIT Representative and Deputy Representative, the Area ECP Representative and Deputy Representative, and any MUR and AAOL Representatives who reside within the Area.

Area Council meetings are held twice a year, typically in the late Winter or early Spring prior to the May Assembly meeting and again in the late Summer or Fall prior to the November Assembly Meeting.
