Awards of the Assembly
The Assembly has established a number of awards to honor its members and District Branches and the accomplishments of those who’ve dedicated themselves to helping those with mental illness.
Assembly Profile of Courage Award
In 1996 the Assembly established a recurring award to formally recognize an APA member who has taken, at risk to her or his professional and personal status, an ethical stand against intimidating pressure for the good of patient care and in keeping with APA Principles of Ethics. This Profile of Courage Award is presented each year at the November Assembly meeting.
Ronald A Shellow Award
The Ronald A Shellow Award was established in 2004. This award is given to a departing member of the Assembly who has served the Assembly far beyond the general standards of service evidenced by most members of the Assembly. This award was developed in memory of Ronald A Shellow MD, Past Speaker of the Assembly.
Warren Williams Assembly Speaker’s Award
The Warren Williams Assembly Speaker’s Award was established in 1984 and recognizes outstanding recent or current activity/contribution in the field of psychiatry and mental health. Each Area Council may award a Warren Williams Assembly Speaker’s Award. The award was named in honor and memory of Warren Williams, MD, Past Speaker of the Assembly.
William Sorum Assembly Member-in-Training Award
The Assembly William Sorum Awards were established in 1991 in memory of William Sorum, MD, Past Speaker of the Assembly. These awards honor a member-in-training and a District Branch in each Area who has made the most notable progress in MIT activities, involvement, participation, or representation in the APA. The recipients of these awards are selected by each Area Council.
Assembly William W “Bill” Richards Rural Psychiatry Award
William W “Bill” Richards Rural Psychiatry Award is administered by the APA Area Councils to recognize an APA member who made exemplary contributions toward the treatment of patients and the practice of psychiatry and rural and/or remote geographic areas.
Assembly District Branch Best Practice Award
The District Branch Best Practice Award was established in 2002 to recognize the efforts and innovative programs of a District Branch in the past year.
