Personal and occupational characteristics of psychiatrists, by sex, 1973

Among the survey respondents, 86.5 percent are men and 11.4 percent
are women; 2.1 percent did not indicate their sex (see figure 2). While
comparable data for 1970 are not available, in 1971 the American medical
Association reported the psychiatry was the third-ranked medical specialty
in number of women physicians; pediatrics ranked first (18.8 percent women) and internal medicine second (14.4 percnet women). In contrast, women comprise approximately 38 percent of the civilian work force.
