BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Editor, Books is responsible for coordinating editorial and production aspects of assigned projects, including substantive editing of chapter and book manuscripts, managing manuscript work flow and editorial schedules; performing editorial and production-related tasks for individual projects; managing approved freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers; serving as liaison with authors and volume editors; and working closely with the Prepress Manager and Production staff throughout the production process. Incumbent supports all steps required to bring books and other assigned products to market and maintain ongoing products, provide input on new products as needed, and provides editorial project management with the team involved in content development, production, and marketing. Products may include chapters, books, webinars, ebooks and apps, and consolidations of content from existing books, journals, video, and news.

DUTIES:

Supports the development of new products by coordinating all editorial tasks related to assigned projects and maintaining schedules and deadlines to ensure timely publication. Works with Editorial, Production, Marketing, and other APP and APA staff to support high-quality and prompt publication of assigned products.

  1. Provides editorial and project management support to acquisition, development, editing, and production of APP products, including books, ebooks mobile apps, and consolidations of content from existing books, journals, video, and news. Under guidance of the Publisher, Editorial Director, and Managing Editor, prioritizes workflow to ensure that high-priority schedules are met. Teams up with Books production staff to create processes that produce flexible files ready for print, web, ebook, and other current formats and flexible enough to meet future needs. Collaborates with managers of functional areas (acquisitions, production, sales and marketing, technical and customer support, and operations/circulation/fulfillment) to identify special needs of new types of products and efficiently integrate them into department workflows. 
  2. Continuously monitors progress on all projects and reports to Managing Editor on status of projects on a weekly basis. Evaluates submissions of new products, performs needs assessment, and provides project management for the team involved in content development, production, and marketing. 
  3. Balances a project’s need for quality assurance steps against the schedule by adjusting time spent on production steps to meet deadlines (e.g., to ensure that a book is available for a meeting). Reviews and provides input on ongoing publishing projects and supports development of new projects as warranted. 
  4. Manages, reviews, and oversees the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers. Provides input on decisions regarding books and new product development, vendors, platforms, and software, and other equipment needed for editing, production, and product delivery. 
  5. Creates a tracking sheet for book chapters, video development, and other product elements as needed. Works with Managing Editor to monitor costs. 
  6. Ensures that necessary permissions for use of previously published material are in order. Performs editorial administrative tasks related to product development.

Does substantive editing of chapter and book manuscripts.

  • Does developmental editing, substantive editing, and copyediting on projects as needed. Under the guidance of the Managing Editor, Editorial Director, and Publisher, collaborates with managers in various functional areas of APA to identify the special editorial needs of individual projects and address these needs during editing and working with authors. Maintains editing schedules of individual projects in coordination with Managing Editor.
  • Ensures that manuscript or other product presents authors’ ideas in a clear, precise, and effective manner. Consults with vendors and in-house staff engaged in production work. Works with Product Development Manager, vendors, and staff to monitor and manage outsourced services for projects. 
  • Copyedits manuscript for style, grammar, and accuracy. Supports quality assurance and testing of new products prior to release. Oversees quality standards for individual projects. Monitors costs of individual projects as needed. 
  • Edits, formats, or creates tables, figures, and other product elements as needed. Verifies scientific nomenclature for accuracy and consistency. Resolves discrepancies and errors in cited references. Evaluates author and proofreader corrections for accuracy and sense. 
  • Assists in development of packaging, marketing copy, and ancillary materials. Consults on production of supplemental materials. Works with all principals to plan and launch new products. Work with staff in different departments to integrate needs of new types of products into their workflows and enhance their departmental capabilities in supporting new product development.

 

Performs editorial/production-related tasks for individual projects. Develops an understanding of the mission, goals, and core audience for assigned projects and their delivery mechanisms in order to inform and support new product opportunities.

  1. Codes computer files for typesetting and electronic publishing. Incorporates author and proofreader corrections into computer files with word-processing and typesetting software. 
  2. Finalizes page layout, including checking for loose lines, widows and orphans, and bad word breaks. Checks and proofreads index with attention to both detail and overall content. Examines bluelines and gives final approval for publication. Revises marketing copy. Assists in determining potential for reuse and repackaging of content into unique products and services. 
  3. Provides input on cover design and reviews cover design and marketing copy for accuracy and appropriateness. Approves advance book copies. Solicits input from Publisher, Editorial Director, Editor-in-Chief, Marketing staff, and other APP and APA staff regarding potential reuse of content. Develops and maintains knowledge about APA and APP functional departments, existing publications and processes, and print and online delivery mechanisms (e.g., www.PsychiatryOnline, www.APPI.org, www.Psych.org, www.healthyminds.org, Psych News alerts, blogs, etc.). 
  4. Consults to Journals and Books production staffs in creating processes that ensure “interoperability” of output from APP’s various publications. Develops working knowledge of XML coding and DTD development and maintenance and advises department staff on procedures for developing flexible new products.

Manages approved freelance copyeditors for some projects, depending on work flow and schedules.

  1. Reviews sample chapter(s) and provides feedback throughout the editing process. 
  2. Supervises overall quality of work and trains freelance copyeditors regarding APPI style and procedures.

Serves as liaison with authors or volume editors on assigned projects. Works closely with the Prepress Manager throughout the production process. Performs administrative tasks related to book production. Advises publishing staff on SWOT issues related to assigned projects.

  1. Provides Prepress Manager with a copy of the manuscript and detailed transmittal documents. 
  2. Coordinates with Prepress Manager to make sure each deadline in the production schedule is met.
  3. Advises Prepress Manager on the reformatting or creation of tables and figures and reviews the final product.
  4. Communicates changes needed in the design and proofs to Prepress Manager. Reviews sample design of text for each project. 
  5. Types own correspondence and other necessary documents, either printed or electronic. Files and archives project-related materials. 
  6. Prepares and mails packages to authors and freelance editors. Performs other duties as assigned. 
  7. Monitors industry literature to stay current on issues that may impact product development. Attend selected professional/industry meetings as assigned. Participate in seminars, courses as warranted.
  8. Networks with industry colleagues and monitors other products on the market.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, science, or behavioral science, with at least 5 years of significant experience in medical or scientific editing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Demonstrated examples of editorial skills 
  • Electronic text editing experience
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, ability to creatively solve problems, and strong content development and project management skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of publishing systems and emerging technologies and content delivery systems as they apply to publishing combined with prior experience in STM publishing.
  • Knowledge of digital publishing technology.
