Development Process

From 1992 to 2010, APA developed and published 23 practice guidelines, including multiple second and third editions. Fourteen of these guidelines remain published on PsychiatryOnline. The process used to develop these guidelines is described here at PsychiatryOnline.

In September 2011, the Steeering Committee on Practice Guidelines approved a new development process intended to meet standards of the Institute of Medicine published in March 2011, including establishing transparency, managing conflicts of interest, composing work groups, using systematic reviews of evidence, articulating and rating recommendations in guidelines, obtaining external review, and updating. The new process is described in the document, New APA Guideline Development Process (updated 2011) (PDF).

The development of APA practice guidelines has not been financially supported by any commercial organization.

Development of APA practice guidelines is directed by APA’s Steering Committee on Practice Guidelines and staffed within the APA Department of Quality Improvement and Psychiatric Services.
