Health Care Reform

As the campaign for President moves through the primary season and toward the conventions and ultimately the November, 2008 national elections, it is clear that, regardless of which party prevails in the campaigns for the White House and control of the Senate and House, reform of the way in which health care is financed, delivered, and administered is of increasing urgency in this country.

At the suggestion of President Carolyn B. Robinowitz, M.D., President-elect Nada Stotland, M.D., and other officers and members of the APA, we are posting resources on this page that hopefully will provide all APA members with information about what the candidates for President are proposing to do about our healthcare system, as well as information about proposals from other medical specialties and health organizations.

APA's current Board of Trustees-approved Position Statement on Universal Access to Health Care is below.  In addition, we are providing a link to an explanation of the presidential candidates' proposals for health reform developed and maintained by the Kaiser Family Foundation.  The Foundation is highly regarded as a thorough and
unbiased source of information on health policy, and has promised to keep this information "evergreen" as the campaign progresses.

This resource is a work in progress, and we will update it with additional information as the year progresses.  Please note that except for the Board-approved position statement on Universal Access, the materials accessed on this page are for information purposes, and do not represent the views or official positions of the American Psychiatric Association.

We hope you find the information useful.
