In 1970, Dr. Kupfer was appointed assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine.  He then joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 1973 as an associate professor of psychiatry and director of research and research training at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC).  He was promoted to professor in 1975 and named Department Chair in 1983.  As Thomas Detre Professor and chair of the department of psychiatry and director of research at WPIC, he has promoted widespread collaborations between clinical investigators in psychiatry and those in more basic neurosciences.

Dr. Kupfer earned his B.A. from Yale University magna cum laude and his medical degree from Yale University.  After completing a medical internship at Montefiore Hospital Center in New York, he continued his postgraduate clinical and research training in psychiatry at the Yale–New Haven Hospital and at the National Institute of Mental Health, Intramural Research Program.

An internationally recognized expert on both mood and sleep disorders, he holds membership in many professional societies, including the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the American Psychosomatic Society, the Society for Psychotherapy Research, the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum, the Association of American Physicians, the American College of Psychiatrists, and the American Psychiatric Association, where he has served as a member of the DSM-IV Task Force, Chair of the Council on Research, and Chair of the Committee on Psychiatric Diagnosis and Assessment.  In 1990, he was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Kupfer also served as the senior editor of the book entitled A Research Agenda for DSM-V, which was published in 2002.

Dr. David J. Kupfer  has agreed that, from the time of approval through the publication of DSM-V, projected in 2012, his aggregate annual income derived from industry sources (excluding unrestricted research grants) will not exceed $10,000 in any calendar year.
