AstraZeneca Young Minds International Award
The APA/AstraZeneca Young Minds in Psychiatry International Awards Program is a commitment by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and AstraZeneca to recognise and support promising international young psychiatrists within 5 years of completing a psychiatric residency.
Currently, there is a substantial shortage of psychiatric researchers, particularly in the area of severe mental illness. This shortage was the subject of a 2003 report by the Institute of Medicine which called for a number of reforms to adress the problem including mentoring and outreach programs. The Young Minds in Psychiatry Awards innovatively addresses this issue through incentives encouraging young physicians to select a career path in research. By focusing on international physicians as well as U.S. based physicians, AstraZeneca and APA can draw from an enormously talented pool of young physicians who may lack the opportunity to pursue careers in research.
Recognizing the lack of resources and research training funds for international candidates, and in particular the unique challenge facing researchers in developing countries, beginning in 2008, AstraZeneca has increased the number of international awards from four to seven unrestricted career development awards. Two awards of $45,000 (USD) will be presented to U.S. physicians; one for an applicant conducting bipolar research and one for an applicant conducting research in the area of schizophrenia. Another two awards also paying $45,000 (USD) will be awarded to international winners conducting research the same areas of study. Three additional awards of $30,000 (USD) each will specifically focus on applicants from developing countries whose economies are classified by the World Bank as low income or lower middle income. In 2006 the World Bank classified 53 countries as low income with a per capita income of $905 or less; and 55 lower middle income with a per capita income of $906 to $3,595.
In addition, winners will be invited to an award ceremony at the APA Annual Meeting in May of each year Winners will be selected based upon merit. The APA claims no rights to the intellectual property of the applicant's research. The APA and AstraZeneca reserve the right to use the researcher's name and institution name for public relations purposes.
