Minority Medical Student Elective in HIV Psychiatry

The American Psychiatric Association has coordinated a senior elective program since 2004.  It is designed to increase the number of racial and ethnic minority medical students trained in the psychiatric care of patients with HIV/AIDS.

The elective is constructed in two parts during the month of September. Students travel to Washington, DC, to attend an intensive 2-day training in HIV psychiatry, meet one-on-one with HIV experts and psychiatric leadership, and participate in the fall meetings of the American Psychiatric Association’s Committee on AIDS.  Then, students disperse to select clinical or research sites participating in an interactive didactic/experiential learning program.
