Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is pleased to announce the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents. This award will give certificates annually to APA members who have made outstanding and sustaining contributions to resident education in psychiatry.

Criteria for Nomination:
Potential nominees should have significant and sustained contributions (at least three years teaching at the nominating institution) to the advancement of resident education in one or more of the following categories:

  • Teaching in different settings - psychiatry emergency services, inpatient, outpatient, community mental health, and other sub-specialty settings
  • Lectures/Didactics
  • Small group teaching or rounds
  • Supervision
  • Course design and/or administration
  • Departmental committees (curriculum, evaluation, and promotions)
  • Institutional committees (admissions, curriculum, student affairs, and promotions)
  • Career counseling
  • Research, publications, and/or presentations
  • Extracurricular programs (i.e. orientation and leading support groups)

Selection Process:
Members of the Council on Medical Education and Lifelong Learning serve as the selection committee and will select annually one salaried faculty member (any faculty member paid by the residency program, affiliated hospital, or any other source for time spent teaching residents) and one voluntary faculty member (any faculty member not paid by the residency program, affiliated hospital, or any other source for time spent teaching residents) per general psychiatry training program. General psychiatry residency training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Royal College of Psychiatrists are eligible to nominate faculty.

Nomination Process:
Nominations must be postmarked by December 1st and include a copy of the nominee's current curriculum vitae as well as the nomination form. The nomination letter must contain information documenting the candidate's specific and sustained contributions to resident education. Attention will be given to activities such as didactics, rounds, supervision, and excellence in difference settings - psychiatry emergency services, inpatient, outpatient, community mental health, and specialized settings. Prior acknowledgement of teaching awards and commendations are particularly helpful. A successful candidate should demonstrate 3 or more years of teaching residents at the recommending institution. Only one candidate for each faculty category (voluntary and salaried) may be nominated by the recommending institution. Nominees must be APA members.

Each nomination packet should include:
