Nancy C.A. Roeske, M.D., Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is pleased to announce the Nancy C.A. Roeske, M.D., Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education. The certificate is awarded annually to APA members and fellows who have made outstanding and sustaining contributions to medical student education.
Criteria For Nomination:
Potential nominees should have made significant and sustained contributions (at least three years at one institution) to the advancement of medical student education in one or more of the following categories: lecture; small group teaching; supervision; course design; course administration; departmental committees (curriculum, evaluation, and promotions); institutional committees (admissions, curriculum, student affairs, and promotions); career counseling; advising medical student psychiatry clubs; advising student groups; research, publications, and/or presentations in medical education; and extra curricular programs (e.g., student orientation and leading support groups).
Members of the Committee on Medical Student Education serve as the selection committee and will select annually, one salaried faculty member (any faculty member paid by the medical school, affiliated hospital or any other source for time spent teaching students [e.g. state, V.A., etc.]) and one volunteer faculty member (any faculty member not paid by the medical school, affiliated hospital or any other source for time spent teaching students [e .g. private practice]) per medical school.
Announcement and Presentation of Certificates:
Each nominee will be notified of the selection American Psychiatric Association results during the month of January.
The Application Process:
Nominations must be postmarked by December 1st and include a copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae and a completed nomination form. The nominator’s documenting letter must contain information documenting the candidate’s specific and sustained contributions to medical student education. Attention will be given to activities such as lectures, small group teaching, course design, supervision, career counseling, research mentoring, relevant publications, and advising medical student groups. Applications should include a sampling of student evaluations. Prior acknowledgments of teaching awards and commendations are particularly helpful. A successful candidate should demonstrate 3 or more years of involvement at the recommending institution.
1. Departmental chair or dean of the medical school
2. Director of medical student education in psychiatry
3. Full time member of the psychiatry department
4. Medical student or psychiatry resident.
